Day 11: Spread Love Like Jelly Challenge (Put Others First)

Loving people is difficult. If we have learned nothing else over the course of this challenge it is that love can be hard work. Sometimes people are mean, weird, annoying, ungrateful…the list goes on. Yet this is what the Bible commands! In Romans 12:10, we learn that it is expected that we, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” This is one of those things that is nearly impossible to do. Especially in today’s society where we often keep an internal scorecard of how much we are doing for someone versus what they are doing for us.

I can’t help but feel a little grumpy when I feel like I have been emotionally available for a friend when she was going through a hard time, and then when I’m having a trying time it seems like she is nowhere around. It is hard not to keep track of the physical things you do for others too. How many times have you helped someone move only to discover they are busy on your big moving weekend?

But to be commanded to honor one another above yourselves? That is to make an effort to love and show love to someone even when it’s inconvenient to you. This means we are called on to understand that LOVE is not actually a feeling but a choice. (Remember all those times I’ve said Love is a VERB?) It’s not what you feel but more what you do. By putting others’ needs first and our own last we are being devoted in our love.

Sometimes I simply do not want to do that! When I get home from work, all I want to do is lay on the couch and decompress. I don’t want to think about the dogs that need to be fed, the chores to do or the things my husband has asked me to complete. I want to relax and unwind…I realize this is selfish. I want to sit with my feet up, glass of wine in hand, and worry only about what to watch on Netflix.

So today, I challenge you to make an effort to put the needs of others before your own.… Click To Tweet
So today, I challenge you (and me!)to make an effort to put the needs of others before your own. Maybe that means taking a few extra moments to put your spouse’s clothes in the dryer before work, or perhaps it means leaving the last of your son’s favorite cookies for him to eat and not scarfing it down as a midnight snack. Maybe you’ll decide to take out the trash or some other small token that is usually the job of your spouse. But today, I want you to focus on other people’s needs and desires and let your own go.

Now, wait a moment. There is a delicate balance here. You are not neglecting yourself. You aren’t sacrificing your own happiness and well-being. The idea here is to simply balance your sacrifice with your self-interest. One has to be able to both give and receive. I believe that in order to truly give of yourself you have to have a full cup to begin with. You can’t have this full cup if you don’t take time to take care of yourself. However, by giving and serving others I find that the reward is often much, much greater than the sacrifice.
